Blue Ridge Parkway

The Blue Ridge Parkway is one of my favorite places to visit. It spans 469 miles from Virginia to North Carolina, so there are many beautiful sights along the way. There's always something new to discover with the changing of seasons, years and time of day, so I'll revisit many spots over and over again. The Blue Ridge Parkway is often referred to as America's Favorite Drive. It's certainly one of mine.

Somewhere between autumn and winter. A blanket of snow covers the ground before the leaves have yet fallen off the trees. This image was made at Moses Cone Manor.

  • There are some spots on the Parkway that I never tire of stopping to see. One being Boone Fork near Grandfather Mountain. As popular an area as it is, I seem to have the place to myself most of the time. This image of mossy rocks, autumn leaves and cascading waters was made during one of my recent visits this fall.

  • The Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. A popular destination for sunset on the Blue Ridge Parkway is the Cowee Mountains overlook, located on the southern end of the Parkway. The mountains get their name from the bluish color, most noticeably before sunrise and after sunset, from the isoprene released in the air from the trees below.

  • Fall color at Grandfather Mountain. Storm clouds were blowing in and out. One minute visibility was just a few feet in front of you and a few minutes later the clouds would blow away to reveal the color on the mountain. It's a beautiful site. This image was taken from Rough Ridge.

I have a weakness for photographing roads. When I'm out and see a scene I like that includes a road I often stop to take pictures. I don't know if it's the lines cutting through the landscape or the idea of where the road leads - I just know I like them. This one was taken about a week and a half ago on the Blue Ridge Parkway around mile post 416.

  • 40/52 - I've photographed this bridge many times, but I think this is the first time with the 50mm lens I'm using for this project. This was taken yesterday, 9/29/12, at Boone Fork on the Blue Ridge Parkway. The leaves seem to be turning earlier this year to me. I don't remember seeing this much color in September before.
